The Office of the Inspectorate has scheduled an announced inspection of the Prisoners of Extreme Risk Unit (PERU) to take place from Monday 24 July to Thursday 27 July 2023.

The Office of the Inspectorate is authorised under section 29(1)(b) of the Corrections Act 2004 to undertake inspections and visits to prisons. Inspection assessments are guided by four key principles of safety, respect, purposeful activity and reintegration.

The PERU, located at Auckland Prison, houses some of New Zealand’s most challenging prisoners and was originally set up in 2019 in response to the Christchurch terror attacks. This will be the Office of the Inspectorate’s first formal prison inspection of PERU.
