Inspectorate contributes to international publication on ageing and dying in prison

The International Corrections and Prisons Association network on External Prison Oversight and Human Rights has published a newsletter on the theme of ageing and dying in prison. It includes a report, by the Office of the Inspectorate Principal Clinical Inspector Fiona Irving, which examines the situation in New Zealand, where an ageing prison population is putting significant pressures on facilities, resources, and services, as there is an increased need to support older people to maintain their well-being, or with end-of-life care.

The newsletter is available here

We acknowledge the contribution of Ivan Zinger, outgoing Chair of the ICPA network on External Prison Oversight and Human Rights. This issue provides an international perspective on the problem of ageing prisoner populations, and related concerns such as the challenges in providing geriatric and palliative care behind bars and medical assistance in dying. It draws from experiences in Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Canada, and the United States.
