Waikeria Prison inspection report 2019

This report is the second of a programme of follow-up prison inspections to be carried out by the Office of the Inspectorate Te Tari Tirohia.

The Inspectorate visited Waikeria Prison between 27-29 August 2019 to carry out the unannounced inspection.

Inspectors assessed the treatment and conditions of prisoners at Waikeria Prison against the Inspection Standards, which are based on the principles of safety, respect, purposeful activity and reintegration. The Inspection Standards relate to 10 areas of prison life: reception and admission, first days in custody, escorts and transfers, duty of care, health, environment, good order, purposeful activity, reintegration and prison staff.

Follow-up inspections consider areas of prison life that were the subject of observations in the initial inspection. Standards that are new or were not considered as part of the initial inspection are also considered in the follow-up inspection.
